When searching for modern furniture, sourcing everything from one place can mean your space ends up looking like a furniture showroom. Mixing it up from a variety of stores makes your home look more curated, more ‘collected over time from hip flea markets’, and more stylish.
Whether you’re looking to add one new piece or an entire room re-do, our list of the fourteen best modern furniture stores has you covered, from large pieces to accessories.
Best Modern Furniture Stores
West Elm
West Elm is the OG of modern furniture stores. Which came first, Mad Men or West Elm? (West Elm came first).
They’ve got your candles, they’ve got your tabletop, they’ve got your new sofa that my daughter wrote on with green sharpie (that I actually got off thanks to their very resilient textile options). You can find hostess gifts for days here, plus a great selection to inspire.
AllModern
Their name says it all.
The online branch of Wayfair, AllModern has that enormous inventory, they’ve done the filtering for you, and the prices are very budget friendly. And it all happens very, very quickly!
IKEA
Everyone has a story about a visit to an IKEA. I mean, there’s a reason they can pay the rent on those enormous stores.
This modern furniture store is great for those on a budget. You can mix in a few IKEA pieces or customize them. Take a Flisberget door, add decorative contact paper to the inset panels, upgrade the hardware, and you’ve got yourself a custom cabinet!
Apt2b
This store will send you swatches, they can ship many pieces in 2-4 weeks, and they’ve got an outlet. Apt 2b is well priced and has a wide range of materials.
You can find side tables in agate, stone, metals and wood. Plus, they offer a detailed “comfort zone” quiz for those who are still hesitant about choosing upholstery online.
Joybird
With brick and mortar stores in Brooklyn, DC and Chicago, Joybird offers comfy looking seating but also a long line of other furnishings.
Their side tables are original looking and will add interest to much of what’s expected in a modern setup. The Bell End Table is super stylish and functional, as I type this I’m trying to picture where I could fit it in here!
Article
I initially learned about Article through my favorite podcast (proof that advertising on podcasts works! True Crime Obsessed and no, I don’t get a commission).
Article has all of the styles, a variety of fabric options, and even offers “bundles” for those who don’t feel entirely comfortable putting things together. They’ll do it for you! Sofa+cocktail table and bundle discount!
Room and Board
It feels sort of like Room and Board is the glammed-down West Elm but in a good way. So many fabrics, so many wood options that look so much more expensive than they are.
They have service down to a science and as a NYC resident, I see a Room and Board delivery truck at least once a day. Everyone loves them!
Target
While not specifically a furniture store, mixing in some hammered metals from Target will stretch your budget while upping your style element.
Some are hits and some are misses, but Project 62 has a lot of great options to mod it up while you pick up micellar water and Campbell’s soup.
CB2
Crate and Barrel’s offshoot specific to modern, millennial furnishings, you can’t go wrong with the service and selection at CB2.
The range from furniture to tabletop to décor is extensive, and you can find gifts here also.
Burrow
Burrow has all the modern options, a “ready to ship” program for in-stock items, as well as accessories and lighting. You can really get it all here!
People love their sofas, but all of their furniture pieces have great reviews, so they are worth checking out.
Camerich
Camerich is more modern than mid century modern, but this store has well chosen pieces that can mix in well to add interest if you’re more of a Mies than a Mad Men.
They’ve got a store in NYC’s Chelsea, but anything can be ordered online if you’re not in this area.
Danish Design Store
They’ve got all of the furniture plus accessories and hostess gifts for days. The pieces are simple, stylish and you could do all of your holiday shopping, too!
The larger pieces of furniture are not inexpensive, but there are finds to be found among their extensive inventory.
Hive Modern
At Hive Modern, you’ll get your Eames, Bertoia, and Saaranen licenced pieces by the greats.
The iconic furnishings don’t come cheap (as they shouldn’t), but can be upholstered in a variety of textiles and come with a history lesson for you to show off your knowledge as you point out your statement pieces to guests.
Jonathan Adler
Everything you need ranging from a Sputnik chandelier to a Valley of the Dolls reference on a pill container. Get your statement pieces here!
Plus, their service is really friendly and helpful. I once bought a pair of handles off of a cabinet and they could not have been more happy to give me the info that I needed.
